Adam Pańczuk and awarded Karczeby project

Karczeby is a traditional term used in East of Poland for people strongly attached to the soil they have been cultivating for generations. The word Karczeb was also used to describe what remains after a tree is cut down - a trunk with roots, which remains in the ground. This also applies to people - it was not easy for the authorities to root them out from their land, even in the stalinism times. Photographer Adam Pańczuk since 2008 has been working on his project which is now featured in
The New York Times photojournalism LENS blog. Previously the photographs have been awarded in numerous photo contests: were selected for the short list in the professional portraiture category at the 2009 Sony World Photography Awards, awarded the first prize in the People category at the Grand Press Photo in Poland, awarded the first prize in the Portratuire category at the BZWBK PressPhoto in Poland and became one of the finalists in the the second PHotoEspana (PHE) OjodePez Award for Human Values.
